With more and more states (Colorado, Washington, Oregon, California, etc.) having legalized medical and recreational cannabis, the National Association of Cannabis Businesses (NACB) was formed to create a self-regulatory organization, bringing together a consortium of the most responsible and ethical businesses in the industry. In building this self-regulatory organization, NACB seeks to improve consumer safety by standardizing its members’ industry best practices and to provide access to banking, insurance, and other financial services allowing its members to operate in full view of and cooperation with the government. NACB needed to build a robust, secure infrastructure for its membership, capable of holding sensitive personal and financial information, while looking ahead to provide intelligent compliance services to ensure that NACB membership represents the highest level of transparency in the cannabis industry. A secure system built on modern standards and approaches was critical to meeting the unique needs of the industry.
Coda worked with NACB stakeholders representing the complex legal, technical, and design needs of the system envisioned by NACB. Coda initiated the engagement with an industry-standard “Minimum Viable Product” (MVP) development approach, and then deployed a global engineering team to deliver a robust system that offers membership registration, member management, and a full web content management system enabling NACB to communicate the rapidly changing landscape of the cannabis industry. Coda leveraged its expertise in building stateless, secure, and scalable systems, applying a container-driven approach built on dedicated systems hosted on IBM Bluemix infrastructure.
NACB gained a system built on open sources and IBM technologies, using dedicated systems to minimize the security risks inherent in multi-tenant systems. In working with Coda, NACB received an integrated, dedicated, secure site enabling members to trust that the information they supplied about their businesses was safe, secure, and contributing to the greater goal of building a self-regulatory organization. Coda helped NACB to realize all the benefits of a custom-designed system with the encryption, scalability, and security provided via software-as-a-service applications. Building on this foundation, NACB is able to quickly move forward to integrate data provided by its membership with artificial intelligence via IBM Watson, reducing the cost while increasing the success of regulatory compliance and maintaining a transparent record of compliance through IBM Blockchain.
